Colors

History

Was red before the socialist era, the national color of Macedonia. During the Ilinden Uprising in 1903, a red flag was raised in the Republic of Krusevo by insurgents. It should be the origin of the red, Macedonian flag.

The flag of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia was introduced in 1944 and officially adopted in 1946. Previously, she was already in Macedonian partisans in use. She was a simple flag with a red background color. Then a five-pointed, red star was pictured on the left above. To apply this color to separate from the red background, he was edged with yellow color. The size of the star could vary, but was usually smaller than in the flags of the other republics. Only when the flags of the republics was shown together, it seemed that the star of Macedonia had the same size. Sometimes the star was mistakenly moved to the center of the flag.

With the attainment of independence in 1992, the Republic of Macedonia adopted a red flag with the Star of Vergina, or the sun of Vergina on. The ancient 16 -beam symbol was found during excavations in the Greek part of Macedonia region. Therefore, Greece claimed the symbol, as it turned against the state name " Macedonia ". On a blue background, the icon in the unofficial flag of Greek Macedonia is being used.

The current flag was designed by the architecture professor Miroslav Grčev.
