Flag of the Romani people

The flag of the Roma (O styago le romengo in Romani ), was proclaimed at the First World Romani Congress in 1971 in London as a general symbol of the international Roma ethnicity. The blue in the upper half and the green in the lower half represent heaven and earth. In addition, the flag of the Roma contains a red chakra, also called spoked, in the center of the flag. The Chakra refers to the Indian origin of the Roma. The Indian flag also contains a chakra.

Within the subgroups, the symbol is controversial. Thus, the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma do not use it. The wheel stand for the idea of a " nomadic " population group. This is a misconception as to, for example, the Central European Roma ( Central Council: " Gypsies " ) not the case.
