Description and significance

The flag is in their view, the most complex national flag of all nations. The white crescent with the five stars on green cloth refers to the Turkic peoples and the green color of Islam. At the leech five traditional carpet patterns are shown, so-called Gul, they are named after the five tribes of the country. The olive branches at the bottom of the carpet pattern symbolize the peace and neutrality of the Turkmen.

In a Turkmen law, the national flag is described as " a symbol of unity and independence of the nation and the neutrality of the state ."

History

As of 1894, the entire territory of present-day Turkmenistan was part of the Russian empire. With the takeover by the Communists the Turkestan ASSR was established, which included the later five Central Asian Soviet republics. On February 17, 1925, the Turkmen SSR was established. They first used only the simple Soviet flag, in 1937 a red flag with the golden lettering TSSR and from the 1940s with the Cyrillic letters TCCP. From 1 August 1953, the Turkmen SSR used a typical for the Soviet Republics variation of the flag of the Soviet Union. During the Soviet flag came two horizontal light blue stripes as an additive. They symbolize the rivers Amu Darya and Atrek. As with all Soviet Flags Star, hammer and sickle were not shown on the reverse side of the flag.

On October 27, 1991 Turkmenistan gained independence from the Soviet Union, the new national flag was not introduced until 1992. On January 29, 1997, two olive branches have been added as a sign of the country's neutrality and the " peace-loving nature" of the Turkmen in the carpet pattern, crescent and star represented now larger. In 2001, the aspect ratio of the " Soviet" was changed to 1:2 2:3. The star now interpret all with a tip vertically downwards and, like the crescent moon, again narrower.
