The African Fish Eagle lives on the Zambezi, whose name is derived from the name of Zambia. It stands for the pursuit to higher goals and the ability of the nation to overcome problems.

History

Although Northern Rhodesia, as Zambia was called as a colony, previously had a coat of arms, only the British Union Jack was used as a flag to 1939. Then you used the typical British Colonial Flag: A dark blue flag with the Union Jack in the upper corner ( Blue Ensign ) and in the flying end the colonial coat of arms. The coat of arms was a golden fish eagle with a silver fish in the catch on a light blue background above six silver waves on black background, symbolizing the Victoria Falls. In a modification of the coat of arms is still in use today.

Between 1953 and 1963 Northern Rhodesia was with Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe ) and the Nyasaland (Malawi ), part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The new coat of arms was a golden rising sun on a blue background for the Nyasaland, the red lion for Southern Rhodesia and the silver waves on a black background for Northern Rhodesia. The Federation broke up on 31 December 1963, when Zambia and Malawi received its independence from Great Britain.

By 1996, Zambia used a flag with a darker green.
