Flag of Zanzibar

The flag of Zanzibar was first officially hoisted on 10 January 2005.

Description

The flag takes on the colors of the former People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba, the 1964 Tanganyika united with Tanzania. Among the three horizontal stripes in blue, black and green, the national flag of Tanzania was added in the naval jack. Was Dropped Let the white stripe on the leech.

History

In 1698, the Imam of Muscat conquered the island from the Portuguese. In 1832 it became the capital of the Sultanate of Oman to which they belonged to the division of the Sultanate in 1860. The Sultanate traditionally used a red flag. 1890 Zanzibar a British protectorate. Since Zanzibar but was not a colony and was under the responsibility of the British Foreign Office, never a British colonial flag pattern after the Red Ensign has been introduced. On December 10, 1963 Zanzibar became independent as the Sultanate. Meanwhile, national flag showed two golden cloves on a green plate on a red background. On January 17, 1964, the Sultan was overthrown. Soon you used then a horizontal tricolor of black, yellow and blue. It was quickly replaced by a blue-black- green tricolor, which also at the leech had a narrow white stripes. The flag is derived from that of the Afro - Shirazi Party, the addition in the black strip led a golden ax on the tricolor ( white with no stripes).

The People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba used this national flag until it went up in Tanzania. After this flag only had an unofficial status, but was used as sports fans. Only in 2005 Zanzibar got back its own flag as an official symbol.
