Flămânzi

Flamanzi is a town in the district of Botosani, in the west of Moldova in Romania.

The place is also under the obsolete name Flămânda known.

Location

Flamanzi lies on the western edge of the Moldavian Plain ( Câmpia Moldovei ). The county town of Botosani (German Botoschan ) is located about 25 km north-west.

History

Flamanzi in 1605 first mentioned. In 1907 the village was the starting point of the great peasant uprising in Romania. 2004 Flamanzi was declared a city. This is, however, continues to be characterized predominantly rural. Apart from agriculture and food processing there are plants for furniture and textile manufacturing.

Population

As of the 2002 census, 11,799 residents were registered in the city, including 11,605 Romanians and 191 Roma. Approximately 4,500 lived in Flamanzi, the other in the four local villages.

Traffic

Flamanzi has no rail connection. Several times a day there are buses to Botosani. Through the city runs the European Route 58
