Flash lock

Floodgate is a technical precursor to the chamber lock. Weirs had only one gate that blocked the outflow of a small lake, for example. Had accumulated on the lake enough raft wood, the door has been opened for a limited time. The wood was carried away on a sloping, wood-cased level ( flood channel ) from the water stream. In this way could be " smuggled " smaller ships. Against the stream they had to be pulled tedious. Weirs were usually next to water mills. They disappeared after the invention of the chamber lock.
