Flight information service

The Flight Information Service (English flight information service, FIS ) are the leaders of aircraft within a flight information region information and instructions that are necessary for the safe, orderly and expeditious conduct of flights, and support search and rescue services.

The following tasks are performed by the Flight Information Service:

  • Dissemination of general information as a flight radio broadcasts
  • Dissemination of targeted information in the individual case
  • Receipt and dissemination of traffic information
  • Receipt and distribution of messages

The scope of flight information service is the workload, and the available technical facilities at the workplace and their possibilities depend.

In addition to the flight information service, a flight information service is offered. Both are controlled as in uncontrolled airspace for flights under visual flight ( VFR), as for instrument flight rules ( IFR ) are available.

The primary difference between the flight information service and the aeronautical information is: The Aeronautical Information Service (English Aeronautical Information Service, AIS) stands before the flight, the Flight Information Service (FIS ) during the flight.

The Flight Information Service is provided in Germany by each air traffic services unit. For this purpose also separate radio frequencies to be kept in the various flight information regions.
