The main castle is square, with round towers at the corners, as in many high medieval fortifications in Britain also. A special feature of Flint Castle, however, is the main tower ( keep). While such a tower usually is inside the castle courtyard or is integrated into the curtain wall, the main tower is freely here in the southwest corner of the moat around the main castle and connected only by a narrow access with her ( Tayloy 2003, p 22). Such insulated main tower also exists in some castles in France, such as Castle Dourdan. In the south, bordering a bailey to the main castle.

Flint Castle is overall not as heavily fortified as Edward's castles Beaumaris Castle and Harlech Castle with its double concentric ring walls.
