Flippase

Phospholipidtranslokatoren, also known as phospholipid or Flippasen Flippasen are specific, ATP -dependent transport of proteins that are found in both the plasma membrane and the membrane of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus of eukaryotes. There are 14 known human isoforms.

Your job is to transport various phospholipids from one side of the membrane to the other. This transport is required because the different phospholipids can be formed in the cytoplasm. A uniform growth of the lipid bilayer of the organelles is thus achieved only when they are transported to the other side. The lipids must wander with their polar head group, the hydrophobic membrane interior. This transport is carried out by membrane-bound transport proteins that Flippasen. The process itself is referred to as flip-flop.
