Flodoard

Flodoard of Reims (* 894 in Epernay, † March 28 966 Reims ) was a West Frankish chronicler.

Life

Flodoard studied at Reims and became a canon at the city's cathedral. As such, he was confidant of the Archbishops Herive and Seulf. 936 he was sent by the Archbishop of Reims Artold to Rome, where he was ordained a priest by Pope Leo VII. While the dispute between Hugh of Vermandois and Artold to the Archbishop dignity he stood at the side Artolds and went twice his benefice forfeited and was placed temporarily for five months under house arrest. After the Universal Synod of Ingelheim had confirmed 948 Artold as archbishop, Flodoard was his chief advisor. It has long been assumed that Flodoard withdrew to a monastery in 952 and is very dedicated to his literary work. Recent research refute the entrance as well as an alleged abbot or even a bishop.

Work

His position as archivist of the Archdiocese allowed him, a "history of Reims Cathedral " ( Historia ecclesiae Remensis ) to write, which is considered one of the most important works of the 10th century today. From the sources available to him, he put together his own history, in which he quotes the most originals in full length. Equally important are his created 919-966 annals. They are appreciated as an excellent source for political history and church history of the West Frankish Empire because of their reliability by historians.
