Flokati rug

The Flokati rug ( Greek: φλοκάτη, n, [ fləkɑ tɪ ː ], phlokátē - woolen blanket; phlokátos - decorated with tassels; phlóka - tassel) is a traditional piece of furniture from the Pindos Mountains in Greece. In the 1970s, had the carpet a fashionable popularity beyond Greece, as well as later the subject of retro waves.

Traditional Flokati rugs were made from naturally colored wool, and colored Flokatis be by coloring the wool before weaving but increasingly produced.

Production

An original Flokati is made in Greece in a multistage process.

First, a chain is drawn from a spun, long staple Schurwollgarn on a hand loom. As shot mostly serves a mixture of wool and synthetic yarn, which gives the rug a special Durability: These wefts later form the spine of the shag and the addition of synthetic fibers make this shape.

So now not only creates a smooth, linen-weave fabric, a square is placed between two warp threads of steel (size = pile length later ) before then wefts are placed.

Would now the square are removed, a sling and no pile would have arisen. Therefore, the coil wound around the rectangular warp yarn is cut by hand, whereby the actual pile is formed. The whole process is repeated, it is created every inch of the Flokati tissue. Still, the pile is in this tissue a series of long strands of wool, his shaggy, so typical of the structure receives the Flokati rug in a later step of the manufacturing process. The closer the rows are set in this weaving process, the harder, denser and quality is the shag.

If the Flokati from the loom comes, he looks more like a shaggy carpet or spaghetti. Only the special thatch and downsizing process ensures the so fluffy surface characteristic and the solid support tissue. This " water friction " mentioned process is usually carried out in the mountains in the north of Greece. The water of the mountain streams is directed specifically into round vats, where such a strong vortex is created. In this whirlpool, the half-finished rugs are given and spend hours frisked by the friction of pure water power and shrunk. The earlier loose tissue is fixed, the pile threads open and from the twisted threads creates the fuzzy sheepskin -like surface. The resulting carpet is very durable and strong.

After a drying phase, which usually does not last very long in the sunny Greek air, the finished Flokatis are checked and shipped all over the world.

The original Greek Flokati from this traditional, tried and tested for centuries of preparation is a natural and environment-friendly product.
