Florence is a city in Lauderdale County in the U.S. state of Alabama, United States, with 35,900 inhabitants ( as of 2004) and the county seat of administration. The geographic coordinates are: 34.83 ° North, 87.67 ° West. The city area is 64.8 km ².
The city was founded in 1818 and planned by the engineer Ferdinand Gardena Sannoner. Sannoner named the city after the capital of Tuscany, Florence.
