Florencia, Caquetá

Florencia on the map of Caquetá

Florencia is the capital of the Colombian province of Caquetá. With almost 163 323 inhabitants ( 2012) Florencia is the second largest Colombian city east of the Andes, to Villavicencio, the capital of the province of Meta.

The urban area is situated on the eastern edge of the Cordillera and adjacent to the Amazon basin. Florencia is therefore in Colombia also often called the gateway to the Amazon.

Through the city runs the Rio Hacha, which is responsible for frequently recurring, severe flooding. Thus, the sewer network is an urgent need of renovation, the poverty rate is significantly higher than the average Colombian.

Florencia, founded in 1902 and the oldest town in the province of Caquetá, has few historical buildings. In the former rubber market today, the regional cultural center is housed.

Industrialization is in its infancy. The Nestlé maintains in Florencia, a pasteurization for milk; almost the only modern operating in the city. Many state-owned enterprises provide the greatest number of skilled jobs, private investment are missing almost completely.

Florencia has a regional airport and is connected to the road network of Colombia by a paved road over the crest of the Eastern Cordillera to Neiva, capital of Huila province.
