Florestan Fernandes

Florestan Fernandes ( born July 22, 1920 in São Paulo, † August 10, 1995 ) was a Brazilian sociologist and politician ( PT).

Fernandes came from a poor family; on the advice of friends, he began in 1941 to study at the University of São Paulo, where he received his doctorate ten years later. With his criticism of Gilberto Freyres race theory, he became one of the most important sociologists of Brazil.

He was a visiting scholar at Columbia University, at the University of Toronto and Yale University. From 1986 to 1995 Fernandes was a member of the Brazilian parliament.

The Library of the Faculty of Arts, University of São Paulo bears his name.
