Florianus

Marcus Annius Florianus († September 276 at Tarsus ) was a Roman Emperor.

Life

Due to the poor source material little certain is known about Florianus. He was succeeded by his half-brother, Marcus Claudius Tacitus (both probably had the same mother ) used after its appointment as emperor as praetorian prefect. The half-brothers fought in Asia Minor first together against the Goths. When he learned of the death of his half brother, is Florianus said in April that 276 immediately himself the new emperor. Although he still did not receive any approval from the soldiers by the Senate, there was no contradiction. Florianus went to his taking office immediately back against the Goths before and supposedly achieved great success. But just before an end of this campaign came to him the news that Marcus Aurelius Probus, commander of standing on the eastern border legions, had been proclaimed emperor.

Florianus broke off immediately all military operations against the Goths and threw all expendable forces to the south. At first it seemed that at Florianus ' victory there can be no doubt, as his forces were far superior numbers. But it soon turned out - the sources - out that its mainly originating from Central Europe soldiers were unable to cope with the hot desert climate. Due to the delaying tactics of Probus and rampant epidemics the morale of the imperial forces crumbled rapidly. In June 276, many ran from Florianus ' soldiers to Probus on. When the emperor tried to secure the loyalty of his troops, he was assassinated in September 276 after a reign of only 88 days, allegedly by their own soldiers. Most likely, the deed was done on the direct orders of Probus, who took over the rule in the sequence.
