Florin Niculescu

Florin Niculescu ( born February 8, 1967 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian violinist of Gypsy jazz. Because of his technique and his empathy, he is now considered one of the best violinists in the genre that dominates the whole spectrum and continues the tradition of Stéphane Grappelli without restrictions.

Life and work

Niculescu comes from a musical family; his father and uncle played violin, his sister cello, his mother the piano. At the age of four years, he received his first lessons from his father; with six years he continued his education at the School of Music Dinu Lipatti, and then click the Enescu Academy. He was awarded a first prize of the Academy and in 1984 with a " special mention " of the jury of the International Wieniawski Competition in Ljubljana. He pursued a career as a classical violinist and came next with his father at family celebrations. At the age of thirteen, he turned to after he heard shots from Grappelli, even to jazz. In 1991 he moved to Paris, where he first lived without valid papers and appeared in a Russian cabaret. He played with Boulou and Elios Ferré and studied at the Conservatoire de Paris. In 1995 he became a member of the band of novels. He also began with other musicians of the genre such as Jimmy Rosenberg, Angelo Debarre, Tchavolo Schmitt, Andreas Öberg, Frédéric Sylvestre and Mike Reinhardt cooperate. In 1999 he took up his award-winning album Gypsy Ballad. The first Django Reinhardt Festival in New York ( 2000), he appeared together with Biréli Lagrène, Babik Reinhardt and Bucky Pizzarelli. 2001 invited him Lagrène to participate in his Gipsy Project, which had the Quintette du Hot Club de France as a model. In the same year he was awarded the Midem as "Jazz Talent of the Year ".

He also worked in France with Charles Aznavour, Françoise Hardy, Patrick Bruel, Johnny Hallyday and Henri Salvador. He also played with Oscar Peterson, John McLaughlin, George Benson, Marcel Azzola, Regina Carter, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Wynton Marsalis, Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna.
