Flotilla of Hope

The Flotilla of Hope was an action of Australian human rights activists in the summer of 2004 against the detention of Afghan refugees in Nauru Detention Centre in Nauru by the Australian government.

The human rights activists sailed with two boats from Sydney towards Nauru, with a message of hope and good will for those trapped in the Nauruan camp refugees. They also had gifts for the children among the refugees there. On June 20, the World Refugee Day, the yachts came to the Nauruan territorial waters and soon in the vicinity of the Nauruan west coast. However, they were immediately asked by the Nauruan police and the government to leave the Nauruan territory. The activists had threatened imprisonment, they would not then vice versa. They sailed back to Cairns; they were disappointed that they could not pass the gifts. However, they announced further actions.

The Flotillas of Hope arrived in Cairns in early September 2004.
