Floyd Fithian

Floyd James Fithian ( born November 3, 1928 in Vesta, Johnson County, Nebraska, † June 27, 2003 in Annandale, Virginia ) was an American politician. Between 1975 and 1983 he represented the State of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Floyd Fithian attended until 1947 the Vestal High School and then to 1951, the Peru State College, also in Nebraska. Between 1951 and 1955 he served in the U.S. Navy. In this time of the Korean War fell. Fithian was until 1971 a member of the Naval Reserve. After his military service, he continued his education until 1964 continued with studies at the University of Nebraska. He then worked as a teacher and in agriculture.

Politically, Fithian member of the Democratic Party. In 1972, he ran unsuccessfully for Congress yet. In the congressional elections of 1974, he was then but in the second electoral district of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the Republican Earl F. Landgrebe took on January 3, 1975, its support for President Richard Nixon during the Watergate affair very hurt him in the election campaign. After three elections Fithian was able to complete in Congress until January 3rd, 1983 four legislative sessions.

In 1982, Fithian opted not to run again for the U.S. House of Representatives. Instead, he ran for the U.S. Senate, but he was defeated by Republican incumbent Richard Lugar with 46:54 percent of the vote. Later he joined the staff of U.S. Senator Paul Simon of Illinois. Floyd Fithian died on 27 June 2003 in Annandale and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
