Floyon

Floyon is a commune with 505 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) in the department of Nord, in the Nord -Pas -de -Calais. It belongs to the district of Avesnes -sur- helpe, to the canton of Avesnes- sur- helpe -Sud and the community association Communes Rurales des Deux helpes.

Geography

The municipality is located in the Floyon thiérache, a landscape in the western foothills of the Ardennes, about 50 kilometers northeast of Saint- Quentin and about 20 kilometers west of the border with Belgium. In the south the city borders on the region Picardie. The 17.47 km ² comprehensive community area consists largely of arable and pasture land. Only in the southeast, an approximately 100 -hectare forest area covers ( Bois de la Houssoye ).

To Floyon include the districts Les Réteaux, Plouy and Chevireuil as well as smaller hamlets and isolated farms.

Neighboring communities of Floyon are Étroeungt in the northeast, Larouillies to the east, La Flamengrie and Papleux in the south, Fontenelle in the southwest and Cartignies in the northwest.

History

1131 emerged the first place as Flon in a document on. However, the settlement dates back much further. In today's Fontenelle, then connected with Floyon, 644 Ursmar was born of Lobbes on July 27. He was a Benedictine abbot, bishop and missionary choir. In the Roman Catholic Church he is venerated as a saint.

Like many other villages in the border region thiérache was constantly exposed to the invasion of marauding mercenaries, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries also Floyon. From this period numerous fortifications, a castle ( during the French Revolution destroyed) and the fortified church in the village.

On August 16, 1789, constituted the church Floyon and was the first in the region.

Attractions

Parts of the bell tower of fortified church of St. Martin are from the 1573. According destruction and severe damage in the 15th, in the late 16th and in the 17th century the church was rebuilt each time.
