Flubendazole is a drug from the group of benzimidazoles. Is a p- fluorinated analogue of mebendazole. Flubendazole is used as a remedy for internal parasites ( anthelmintic ).

Mechanism of action

Flubendazole has a broad spectrum of activity against roundworms ( nematodes) and tapeworms ( cestodes ). It acts relatively slowly, so that a sufficiently long contact time must be guaranteed to worm. In animals with faster intestinal transit ( carnivores ) therefore has the means less good.

Like all benzimidazoles binds Flubendazole to tubulin, a protein subunit of microtubules, the parasite cell ( Mikrotubuliinhibitor ). This leads to damage of the cytoskeleton, thereby intracellular transport and synthesis processes are disturbed (mainly glucose transport, ATP synthesis). The parasite formally starved and dies and is excreted in the feces. By inhibiting the formation of the spindle apparatus and disorder of metabolism during embryogenesis the agent is also effective against the eggs of the worms ( ovozid ).

Flubendazole is not absorbed in the intestine.

Spectrum

When administered orally, about two to three days is administered in domestic dog and domestic cat Flubendazole. The medication works against hookworm ( Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephalum ), dwarf nematodes ( Strongyloides spp. ), Roundworms ( Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Toxocara cati ), whipworms ( Trichuris spp. ) And tapeworms of the genus Taenia True. In dogs with infestation with heartworms ( Dirofilaria immitis ) of the drug for 5 days is administered subcutaneously.

Counter planarians ( Dugesia tigrina ), hydras ( Cnidaria ) in the aquarium can Flubendazole also be used. It is mixed into the water, 7 days allowed to act (no water changes ). 3-4 weeks after the application should be repeated.

Contraindications and side effects

The product is very well tolerated, even severe overdoses remain without consequences. The LD50 for the mouse is taken orally about 2560 mg · kg -1.
