The Flumendosa about 122 km the second longest river in Sardinia. It rises in the south-eastern Gennargentu Mountains and flows between Muravera and Villaputzu into the sea. Was at this river mouth, according to the directions " Itinerarium Antonini " from the 3rd century BC, the Phoenician city " Sarcapos " (Roman: " Saeprus "). Presumably, from this place today's region of Sarrabus her name. This ancient settlement is now usually identified with the place Villaputzu.

The Flumendosa has made the Sarrabus one hand to a fertile plain on the other, until 1949 one of the worst malarial regions of the island.
