Fluoranthene is an unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbon. Under standard conditions, fluoranthene is a yellowish to green, crystalline solid. It occurs in coal tar and is one of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Fluoranthene is an intermediate in the preparation of drugs and pharmaceuticals.
The term is derived from fluoranthene the fluorescent property of the substance and not of fluorine atoms in the molecule.
Biological Significance
Fluoranthene is metabolized in the human body to 2 - and 3- Methylfluoranthen Methylfluoranthen and their further degradation products.
Safety
Fluoranthene is harmful if swallowed. In tests with animal organisms, bacteria and human cells mutagenic and tumorigenic effects were observed. Acute and chronic toxicity is not yet fully known. The LD50 for oral administration is in rats 2000 mg per kg of body weight, with dermal application in rabbits, 3180 mg / kg.
Fluoranthene is under the water hazard class 2 and therefore classified as hazardous for water. The decomposition of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide may be released.
