Fluoroform ( CHF3 molecular formula ) is a colorless, odorless, non-toxic and non-flammable inert gas. Due to its structure ( CHX3 ) it is homologous to chloroform, bromoform and iodoform and analog named.

Representation

Fluoroform (HFC -23) is obtained in the production of chlorodifluoromethane, which is a starting material for the production of teflon, as a by- product. In the laboratory, it may be obtained from iodoform, and mercury (I ) fluoride, or chloroform, and hydrofluoric acid.:

Properties

Fluoroform is slow to react. It only reacts with strong oxidizing reagents.

Use

CHF3 is used as extinguishing and refrigerant as well as the process gas in the dry etching using.

Environment

Since trifluoromethane no chlorine or bromine contains, it does not attack the ozone layer. Currently, the atmosphere contains about 200,000 tons of fluoroform. It acts as a greenhouse gas, about 15,000 times as powerful as carbon dioxide. Therefore, fluoroform is named as " hydrogen-containing fluorocarbon " in the Kyoto Protocol, whose emissions must be reduced.

Emissions Trading with HFC -23

In the headlines this fabric is advised as during inquiries regarding climate certificates that can be sold by saving the emissions of this substance was tricked, according to the television magazine Monitor: in exchange for savings mainly Indian and Chinese chemical factories for the production of fluoroform ( HFC -23) German coal-fired power plant operators -bought, the ability to produce significantly more carbon dioxide. This was elicited by tracking the fluctuating quantities of emissions of HFC -23.

Precautions

The gas should not be inhaled as it can cause respiratory arrest. From about 20 percent by volume in the breathing air enters a narcotic effect (see MSDS). NFPA and ISO standards use the NOAEL is at 30 percent by volume.
