Flying disc

A Frisbee, also flying disc, floating lid, sail disc or frisbee called, is a mostly manufactured from plastic, disc-shaped sports and leisure equipment. It is held by aerodynamic lift and gyroscopic motion in the air. In addition to the known use as a beach toy to be played with this device also sports numerous individual and team sports. Originally from the U.S., especially the Frisbee Sports Ultimate and Disc Golf have now spread around the globe.

The record for the longest Frisbee throw keeps David Wiggins from the USA with 255 m.

History

The current name " Frisbee " can be traced back historically to a transfer of the company name " Frisbie Pie Company ". This family business was founded in 1871 by William Russell Frisbie the baker in Bridgeport (Connecticut) on the East Coast. This bakery selling cakes, among others, in round cake pans ( pie tins ).

In the 1940s, children began to play with the discarded forms, the only over very short distances, however, were airworthy.

This observed Walter Frederick Morrison, who had in his childhood itself sells the cake " Frisbie Pie Company ," and set about to improve the flight characteristics. He began to stabilize the molds with metal rings, but that did not bring the desired success. After further tinkering he held in 1948, the first self-made plastic plate in his hands. 1951 Morrison created his second disc, " Pluto Drive", which was prepared from the commercially available from January 13, 1957 Wham -O and distributed. This model had quite a few important characteristics which still have the current discs, for example the grooves in the outer third of the top of the plate to stabilize the flight path.

1959 heard Rich Knerr, one of the owners of Wham- O, for the first time the term " Frisbie / Frisbee ". He knew nothing about the origin of the name, but left the flying discs enter under the trade name " Frisbee ".

In 1980, Rainer Pawelke within an educational sports theater project frisbee game at the University of Regensburg in front, where he worked as a professor in the physical education teacher education. In a 1986 by the Federal Ministry of Science through contract research project new movement games were developed under his guidance with the Frisbee, including Frisbee baseball.
