Fo Guang Shan

Fo Guang Shan (Chinese佛光 山, Buddha Mountain of Light ' ) is a Chinese Buddhist Order of the Mahayana tradition, which has achieved an international reputation. The Order founded and led worldwide temples and groups under his name.

The headquarters of Fo Guang Shan, near Kaohsiung ( Taiwan), is the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan. Together with Tzu Chi is the organization one of the largest charitable organizations in Taiwan. It was founded in 1967 by the Honorable Master Hsing Yun, a famous Buddhist monk and scholar. The Order developed and promotes the humanistic Buddhism, a modern Buddhist philosophy, which is very popular at the time in Taiwan.

The aim of the Order is to help the Buddhist world to a greater awareness but also to bring him in life and in the hearts of men. The order is part of the Chan of the Linji Yixuan founded by Linji zong.

History of Fo Guang Shan

1967 Master Hsing Yun purchased more than 30 acres of land about 20 km northeast of Kaohsiung Dashu community located in Kaohsiung County as the site for the construction of a monastery. The inauguration ceremony was held ranked 16th May of that year.

The monastery is surmounted by a person standing on the top of the Fo Guang Shan mountain 36 meter high statue of the Amitabha Buddha. On the monastery grounds also include even the "way of the Thousand Buddhas", were erected at the donated Buddha statues.

In the main hall are three large statues of the Buddha: Amitabha flanked by Mahasthamaprapta and Avalokitesvara. For large events to holidays and the square in front of the main hall is used by thousands of people to be able to accommodate.

Activities

Fo Guang Shan is a worldwide organization today. In recent decades, temples and organizations have been established on five continents in 173 countries, which are supported by 1,300 nuns and monks. The Order Fo Guang Shan promotes education and social services. He supports the maintenance and establishment of public universities, Buddhist colleges, libraries, publishing houses, translation agencies, Buddhist art galleries, tea houses and mobile medical clinics worldwide. The Order maintains and manages a home for children, a major and college, a retirement home and a television station.
