Foday Musa Suso

Foday Musa Suso ( born in 1950 in Sare Hamadi a small town in Wuli District in the Upper River Region ) is a musician and composer from the West African nation of Gambia. He is a member of the Mandinka ethnic group, and is a Griot ( different spelling Jali ). His favorite musical instrument is the kora; but he also plays Gravikord and various other instruments.

Suso emigrated in the 1970s to Chicago, where he led the 1978 Adam Rudolph, Hamid Drake and Joseph Thomas, the world-jazz band The Mandingo Griot Society founded, which also performed with Don Cherry.

He has performed with Philip Glass, Herbie Hancock and the Kronos Quartet.
