Fojnica

Fojnica is a small town and municipality of the same name in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It lies on the Fojnička Rijeka, a tributary of the Bosna in Central Bosnia Canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Geography

The municipality Fojnica is located in a medium-to high-mountain region with altitudes above 2,100 meters, about 50 kilometers northwest of Sarajevo. Settlements are to be found mainly in the area of ​​rivers and Fojnička Željeznica, also run the two main streets of the town in their valleys.

Fojnica is surrounded by the Association of municipalities of Vitez and Busovača in the north, the east Kiseljak, Kreševo ​​the southeast, Konjic in the southwest, Gornji Vakuf and Novi Travnik in the west to the northwest.

History

Fojnica as a city is first mentioned in 1365, when German and Dubrovnik miners arrived here to develop this rich iron ore area.

Population

The largest part of the municipality is mountainous and therefore very sparsely populated. Larger towns are located only in the two main valleys.

In the 1991 census, the following composition of the population was:

  • Bosniaks - 8,024 ( 49.23 %)
  • Croats - 6,623 (40.64 %)
  • Serbs - 157 (0.96 %)
  • Yugoslavs - 407 ( 2.49% )
  • Other - 1,085 (6.68 %)

The official estimate for 2003 shows the following distribution:

  • Bosniaks - 8,930 ( 67.14 %)
  • Croats - 4,333 ( 32.58 %)
  • Serbs - 37 (0.28 %)

Tourism

Fojnica is known for its thermal springs, which help people in healing various illnesses for centuries. In Fojnica is the modern center for medical rehabilitation.

Above the town is the old Franciscan monastery, where like the museum with a treasure chamber, library, archive, art gallery, by mining - geological collection, the crests of Fojnica ( 1463 ), incunabula is located. The monastery houses an interesting collection about the life and work of the monks and the history of the Franciscan Order in the Balkans.
