Folio (printing)

A Tome (Latin folium, leaf ') is a book in folio format. The folio format is a book format, in which the size of the side this results in that the original sheet of paper which corresponds to the dimensions of the traditional Roman parchment sheet, folded once is ( Folium ). It has often been about the size of DIN A3 sheet ( very roughly about 29 × 40 cm).

Smaller books were, however, referred to as quart ( 4o ) or octave band (8o ). Very small books was called in the old parlance duodecimo volumes ( 12o ). This classification according to specific spine heights comes from the widespread since the Middle Ages habit to organize in libraries books from practical considerations according to their size. Only in the time of the Enlightenment, sat an embossed thematically -order system ( Winckelmann / Francke ) by in libraries.
