Foncine-le-Haut

Foncine -le-Haut is a commune in the French department of Jura in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Foncine -le-Haut is located at 860 m above sea level. M., about 16 km south-east of the city Champagnole (air line). The village is located in the Jura, in an open basin at the mouth of Brideau in the Saine, between the forest heights of haute Joux in the north and Mont Noir in the south.

The area of ​​28.95 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The landscape is characterized by terrain ridges and longitudinal troughs, which are oriented in the southwest-northeast, according to the strike of the Jura Mountains in the region. The central part of the area is occupied by the 2.5 km wide longitudinal trough of the Saine, which forms a syncline in geological terms. History

Scattered findings indicate that the municipality of Foncine- le -Haut ( Menhir of La Chevrerie ) and during the Roman period has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The place name Foncine, which is first mentioned in the 13th century, developed over the centuries from the original fond de la Saine ( valley of the Saine ). Since the Middle Ages belonged Foncine -le-Haut to rule Château- Vilain. It formed in a barony, and received certain liberties granted in the 14th and 15th centuries. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. In 1790 Foncine -le-Haut was an independent community after the division of the greater community Foncine.
