Fontenais

Fontenais is a municipality in the district of Porrentruy in the canton of Jura in Switzerland.

Geography

Fontenais is located on 458 m above sea level. M., 1.5 km south of the district municipal seat Porrentruy (air line). The village is located in a side valley of the Allaine at the northern foot of the Jura mountains in the Ajoie ( German Elsgau ).

The area of ​​10.5 km ² large municipality area includes the valley of Fontenais, which is bounded on the north by the hills of La Banne (511 m above sea level. M. ) and La Perche (526 m above sea level. M. ). Between these hills there is a klusartige bottleneck through which the Fontenais Valley is drained to Allaine. Population

With 1260 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Fontenais one of the larger municipalities in the canton of Jura. Of the 95.0% inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 2.8 % and 1.0 % Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Fontenais recorded a significant increase in the second half of the 19th century. After a decline in the early 20th century a slow but continuous rise in population is registered since 1960.

Economy

Fontenais was until the late 19th century, a predominantly agricultural village embossed, then the watch industry quickly grew in importance. History

Attractions

The parish church of Saint- Pierre -et -Paul was built in 1935. The castle, which was built in 1740 in Rococo style for the prince-bishop's doctor Jean Faber, has two massive towers with onion domes.
