Food First

Food First, also known as the Institute for Food and Development Policy, is an non-governmental organization based in Oakland ( California). It was in 1987 awarded the Right Livelihood Award.

Food First was founded in 1975 by Frances Moore Lappé and Joseph Collins and describes himself as a "people's think tank and education -for -action center" ( think tank of the people and action-oriented education center ).

Food First supports a bottom- up approach ( from bottom to top ) to solve the problem of hunger in the world. The organization believes that each country can feed itself when it aligns its agriculture on subsistence rather than export. The basic idea FoodFirst corresponds to the concept of food sovereignty.

Food First turns sharply against institutions like the World Trade Organization, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, which promote and demand the world-market orientation of national economies. 2004, the campaign against the proposed American Free Trade Agreement was a focal point of his actions.

The organization also opposes the rules of the U.S. trade with Nigeria. She claims that the trade currently severely affected the Nigerian economy and that trade rules " legalize the exploitation of the natural resources of Nigeria ."
