Foramen lacerum

The foramen lacerum ( from Latin torn hole ) is a hole in the bony skull base. It is out of focus part of the Rock ( petrous ) of the temporal bone ( temporal bone ), limited by the great wing of the sphenoid ( sphenoid ), as well as a small part of the occipital bone ( occipital bone ).

The foramen lacerum makes a connection from the middle cranial fossa ( fossa media ) of the inner skull base (base of the skull interna) to the outer skull base (base of the skull externa). It provides passage for the large and small rocks nerve, and the deep rocks nerve ( nerve greater petrosal nerve, petrosal and deep petrosal nerve ). The rest of the foramen is closed by fibrous cartilage tissue during life.
