Forbes Global 2000

Forbes Global 2000 is an annual list of the 2,000 largest publicly traded companies in the world. It will be published by the U.S. business magazine Forbes Magazine.

Overview

The Forbes Global 2000 list was first published by the U.S. business magazine Forbes magazine on July 3, 2003. It contains the 2,000 largest publicly traded companies in the world. The list replaced the published annually between 1997 and 2003 Forbes 500 list of the 500 largest companies in the United States. The list is far from complete, as not American corporations will be considered only if they maintain trade relations with the U.S.. Therefore, missing a whole lot of the actual largest listed companies.

There is no globally recognized evaluation standards for the size of a company. Possible sizes are the sales, the market capitalization or the number of employees. Forbes has chosen a combination of sales, net profits, assets and market value. The rankings of the companies are added together in the equally weighted categories to a rank.

The applied Forbes equal weighting of the four criteria turnover, net profit, assets and market value, without taking into account the industry of individual companies, resulting in a distorted picture in favor of debt- intensive industries such as banking and insurance. In particular, because the assets also includes the debt-financed assets and thus does not reflect the actual amount of own funds. Thus, for example, Bank of America, only about a third of sales, one-third of the profits, and about 40 percent of the market value of ExxonMobil, but is according to the method applied by Forbes still one place ahead of ExxonMobil.

Since 2003, lay in the Forbes Global 2000 list almost always corporations from the U.S. ( Citigroup, ExxonMobil, General Electric, JPMorgan Chase ) to square 1 Only in 2008, listed along with HSBC, a non-US company on the first rank. The best placement of a German company Allianz reached in 2008 with the 14th.
