Ford Consul Capri (1962 )

The Ford Consul Capri was the 2-door coupe version of the Consul Classic, which introduced Ford of Britain from Dagenham (England ) 1961. In the UK the car between January 1962 and July 1964 was available; by Ford Cologne was offered without great success of the car.

Like the sedan version of the Consul Capri Classic also offered some unusual equipment details, for example, dual headlights, multi-stage switchable wipers, disc brakes, dimming instrument lights and cigarette lighter. The car was referred to as "The First Personal car from Ford of Great Britain" in advertising in December 1961. He had been constructed by Roy Brown, who also designed the Edsel vehicles. The name of the design was " Sunbird", a cross between Thunderbird and the Sunliner. The vehicle had flowing lines, a large boot and a hardtop.

Originally, the 4- cylinder in-line engine was fitted with three crankshaft bearings and 1340 cc (model 109E ); these early copies but were considered underpowered and suffered from frequent crankshaft defects. As of August 1962, the cars were delivered with the larger 1498 - cc engine (model 116E ), which was a significant improvement. The first 200 Consul Capri were hand-made, left-hand drive copies for export. At the IAA in Frankfurt ( Main ) 1961 all 88 units have been sold in Germany, from 1961 to 1964 there were only 500 pieces. The earliest of these hand-made copies were delivered to Germany. The Consul Capri 335 is one of the rarest Ford automobiles today.

1963, a GT version was introduced (even with the engine 116E, as in Cortina GT). The whole car was very expensive to produce, and ran at the end of production in parallel with the popular Cortina, sales were so disappointing ( 18,716 pieces, including 2002 GT versions ) that the Consul Capri after only 2 ½ years from the model range disappeared.
