Ford Granada (Europe)

The Ford Granada (named after the Andalusian city of Granada ) was a car of Ford -Werke and located in the upper middle class. It was built by the spring of 1972 to early 1985 in Cologne and Dagenham in two generations.

The Granada was the successor to the types 20M/26M the P7 series and the Ford Zephyr. With the U.S. model of this name he had nothing to do.

The somewhat simpler parallel model equipped to Granada was the Ford Consul, successor to the Ford 17M (P7 ), who served the middle class, while the more luxurious Ford Granada aimed at the upper class. Consul and Granada differed to the merger of the model series in the spring of 1975, among other externally by different grille and also possessed different equipment and engines.

While the consul was sold as a successor to the 17M mainly with four-cylinder engines, the Granada had a much better equipment and was until 1975 only available with V6 engines. Exception was the special model GT Consul, in which the V6 engines were offered with 2.3 and 3 liters of displacement as a top engine.

The chassis was with double wishbones at the front and independent suspension on trailing arms rear suspension bolts not only in comparison to previous models more complicated and much more modern designed, but also reached the level of much more expensive contemporary competing products. The already long existing among the competitors safety steering column found in the new model now also use.

The V- engines have been taken over from previous models; complemented by a 3.0 -IV engine English origin ( the so-called " Essex " engine of the Ford plant in Dagenham, Essex ). Only the built- Consul at the 2.0 -liter engine with overhead camshaft from the Ford Taunus TC was a newer construction.

The Granada was as a station wagon - called " tournament" - and offered as a coupe, the latter variant was first out with a hip movement as a " fastback sedan " (or colloquially " hip swing Coupe " ) in the sales program and should make a two-door sedan superfluous. After this beginning has also been included in 1973 sales program, was awarded the " fastback sedan " officially named " Coupe ". In early 1974, also the hip movement of the coupe was straightened.

Trivia

The Ford Granada was of its dimensions significantly larger, the cluster over its competitors, called Ford tournament, was again significantly longer than the four-door sedan and its time the largest production wagon in Europe. Ford campaigned temporarily with the slogan " a lot of car for the money ." On the used market the car was very popular with larger families, as well as in Turkish guest workers in Germany. The Granada was therefore temporarily the ironic nickname " Turk -Benz ".

In films and television series of the Ford Granada was a long time used, for example, as a company car the boss Cowley in the British police series The Professionals, there a Ford Granada was in the opening credits to see who jumped through a glass facade. A green Ford Granada was the first production run from protagonist Faber ( Klaus Wennemann ) used throughout as a company car in the first seasons of the German crime series The Investigator, as this series was already quite advanced in years. Dieter Hallervorden drove in the movie The Snoop Granada one of the first series as a taxi. Schimanski from the series Tatort used in the early days also via several episodes away a Ford Granada, here is a vehicle of the second series, as a civilian company car. Since the vehicles were available as long Used in large numbers and relatively inexpensive, later a great number were used for staged accident scenes. Last time was the Ford Granada Ghia in Edgar Wright 's film The World's End, the black model of Simon Pegg had there been nicknamed " The Beast."

Thanks to its large crumple zones and the strong engine of the Ford Granada is a popular stock car vehicle since the 80s. The largest German stock car event, the TV total Stock Car Crash Challenge, Granada dominate for years the number of participants in the highest displacement class and won there ( with one exception) have always been the day's victory.
