Forest of Dean Central Railway

The Forest of Dean Central Railway was a British railway company in Gloucestershire in England.

The Company was incorporated on 11 July 1856. The aim was to build a railway line between a planned port at Brimspill on Severn, and the coal mines Howbeach, New Fancy and Foxes Bridge in the Forest of Dean. Since not all shareholders paid for their shares, the company already came shortly after the foundation in financial problems. Therefore, the Great Western Railway went into the company. Opened on May 25, 1868 7.6 km long route was built in the broad gauge of 2140 mm. It was the last broad gauge line which was opened in the UK. In Awre the connection to the network of the Great Western Railway took place. The section between the port of New Fancy mine and Foxes Bridge was not completed, because now the mine their coal taken away otherwise.

The Forest of Dean Central Railway was incorporated only with the Railways Act 1923 in the GWR.

With the construction of the Severn and Wye Railway route and Canal to the coal mines in the Forest of Dean, the company lost in 1875 a large part of their clientele. From 1921, an operation was performed only on the leg to the place Blakeney. This section was decommissioned in 1949.
