Formia

Formia ( in ancient Formiae ) is an Italian port town and a seaside resort in the province of Latina in the Lazio region with 36 441 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 134 km southeast of Rome, 84 km north- west of Naples and 74 kilometers southeast of Latina.

Geography

Formia is situated on the Gulf of Gaeta, on the Tyrrhenian Sea. 6 km south of Gaeta, on the old Roman road Via Appia between Fondi and Minturno. The municipality has in the north share of the Natural Park of Monti Aurunci. Formia is a member of the Comunità Montana dei Monti Aurunci.

The districts Castellonorato, Gianola, Maranola, Penitro and Trivio are partly already in the Aurunci.

The neighboring municipalities are Esperia (FR), Gaeta, Itri, Minturno, Spigno Saturnia.

History

Formiae belonged since 338 BC to the Roman Republic, first as a civitas sine suffragio (without voting rights ). 188 BC its inhabitants were full Roman citizens. In imperial times it was under Hadrian to Colonia Colonia Aelia as Hadriana Augusta. 859 Formiae was destroyed by the Saracens. The inhabitants retreated to two hill settlements, which were united in 1863 under the name of Formia.

Situated on the Via Appia Formiae was a popular place for the villas of rich Romans. In the late Republic Marcus Tullius Cicero talked repeatedly on his Formianum on, near which he was murdered during the proscriptions of 43 BC. More villa owners there were Pompey and Manius Aemilius Lepidus.

The remains of several such villas are to be seen near Formia. Along the Via Appia there are some monumental tombs, the largest of which arbitrarily named Tomba di Cicerone ( " grave Cicero " ) has received.

Policy

Michele Forte ( PdL ) was elected in April 2008 to the mayor. His center-right alliance also with 18 of 30 seats, the majority in the City Council.

Economy and Transport

Formia is since ancient times by the Via Appia, today Strada Statale 7, developed. From this the SS 82 della Valle del Liri branches that connects Formia Avezzano and the Autostrada del Sole A1 exit Ceprano. With the Formia train station of the city is connected to the Roma- Formia -Naples. The station is one of the 103 stations, which are due to their importance by its own subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato, the CentoStazioni SpA, managed and maintained.
