The numbers of cylinders and displacements of the great series machines had developed more and more in the direction of 750 - cc four- cylinders on the European and U.S. markets at this time. For this reason, and to the rules of the previous races and series to unify, was announced as the price of FIM in 1973 by the FIM first international championship for such machines. However, the series suffered from the very beginning under a complicated regulations and the fact that the race outside the Grands Prix were held around the world motorcycle championship.

In 1979, the FIM decided to retain only a premier class of motorcycle racing. The choice fell on the existing since 1949 500 cc class of the Motorcycle World Championship. In the formula 750 it had come more and more problems in the previous years, as the motor power for the tires and landing gear of that time were too big. In addition, the formula had become more and more Yamaha " brand trophy ". 1979 were 60 pilots who could score points, not on the road only four on a Yamaha TZ750.
