The Saotomensische language (self- designation Forro ) is a Portuguese- based Creole, spoken in São Tomé and Príncipe.
The name means " freed slave " in Portuguese. The language is also called crioulo santo mense. It should not be confused with the dialect of Portuguese, which is spoken in São Tomé and Príncipe.
Classification and related languages
Saotomensisch is a creole language whose superstrate language is Portuguese. The substrate languages are different Bantu languages and Kwa languages.
Saotomensisch strongly resembles the Principensischen, Angolar and the Annobonesischen.
Vocabulary
Although the Sao-Tomean Kreol a limited contact with the Portuguese, which was regarded as a prestige language, and has had, it retained a small number of substrate - language elements, more than the Creoles of Cape Verde, the less retained West African tracks. Meanwhile, about 93 % of the vocabulary of Saotomensischen from Portuguese and only 7% of West African origin.
Although now speak 95% of São Tomeer Portuguese ( the native West African languages are largely extinct ) is the national language of the island Saotomensisch, which is spoken by 85 % of the residents.
