Forstbotanischer Garten Tharandt

The Forest Botanical Garden Tharandt is an institution of the Technical University of Dresden and at the same time the Saxon Landesarboretum. It houses single stem trees and has been greatly expanded to North American forest formations since 1997. It is easily accessible from Dresden. A special feature is the close interaction with the Faculty of Forest, Geo and Hydro Sciences at the Technical University of Dresden. It is headed by Andreas Roloff and the curator Ulrich Pietzarka. To finance contributes a sponsoring.

Different concepts

The Forestry Botanical Garden shows 1990 species and subspecies of trees on 34 acres of foothills; home are only 240 species in Central Europe. Located in the historic eastern part of traditional single strain collections are mainly shown in the prototypical near new western forest formations make the structures and dynamics of naturally grown forests recognizable.

The forest botanical garden was established for academic research and teaching and the examinations and also for the culture and documentation of plant collections. Also the value of public education was early on recognized and included in the concept. In recent times, the goal of conserving biodiversity was added.

Eastern Part

The eastern historical part comprises 18 acres on a steep spur of the Tharandter Kienberg. There is also the two-aisled fully automatic air-conditioned greenhouse. The greenhouse includes a 60 -square-foot cold house and a 160 -square-foot house warm. The hot house ensures a temperature of at least 20 ° C at night and a humidity of 80 %. Cold house and hot house are open to visitors. There is also a preparatory and technical room and the culture department.

Western Part

The western part shows as forestry and landscape park of 15.4 hectares on a flat rounded tip 42 North American forest formations, including:

  • Forests of the Rocky Mountains
  • Coastal forests
  • Douglas fir forests
  • Forests of the Appalachians
  • Prairies and two ponds with trees the Great Salt Lake and the Great Lakes.

The natural dynamics of forests is particularly well seen in the species-rich mixed stocks of North American forests, as this produces very intense competition. The trees are due to age not yet fully grown, the bushes, shrubs and herbaceous layer are fully trained to a large extent.

Zeisiggrundbrücke

The eastern historical part and the western part of North America are separated by the Zeisiggrund through which the state road from Dresden Freital and Tharandt leads to Freiberg. The Valley overcomes the 117 -meter-long Zeisiggrundbrücke, a delicate structure of wood and steel, was completed in November 2003 and cost € 645,000. She was awarded the Saxon State Prize for Building Culture in 2006. The bridge is wheelchair accessible.

Garden inspector Gustav Büttner developed the 1875 is still valid today plan to plant the systematic botanical districts. The first greenhouse in Forest Botanical Garden was founded in 1880. In 1905, we began with the installation of the geographical districts. The second greenhouse was built in 1951.

In 1978, PA Schmid introduced the detailed record of the origins of the plants.

Instead of the original greenhouses a fully automated greenhouse was built in 1996. In 2001, the Forest Botanical Garden was dedicated to the Saxon Landesarboretum. In the same year began with the installation of the North American forest formations.
