Fort Pierce is a city and also the county seat of St. Lucie County in the U.S. state of Florida with 41,590 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

Fort Pierce is on the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River, which forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway. Vero Beach is located about 20 km north and Orlando 180 km northwest of the city.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 41,590 inhabitants distributed to 21,357 households. The population density was 1088.7 inh. / Km ². 45.3 % of the population were white, 40.9 % African American, 0.6 % Native American and 0.9 % Asian Americans. 9.7% were members of other ethnic groups and 2.7% in different ethnic groups. 21.6% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 29.5 % of all households lived in 33.7 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 61.0 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.59 persons and the average family size is 2.23 people.

29.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.8 % were 20-39 years old, 24.8% were 40-59 years old and 20.3 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 36 years. 49.3 % of the population were male and 50.7 % female.

The average annual income was $ 30,869, while 30.2 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 76.25 % of the population spoke Spanish 14.83% and 8.92% had a different mother tongue.

Traffic

Fort Pierce is from Interstate 95, from U.S. Highway 1 (SR 5) and the Florida State Roads A1A, 68, 70, 91 (Florida 's Turnpike, a toll road ) and 615 crosses or touches. In addition, the railway line of the Florida East Coast Railway runs through the town. In the north, bordering the St. Lucie County International Airport to the city.

Crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 616 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) in the high range. There were nine murders, 27 rapes, 142 robberies, 304 injuries, 689 burglaries, 1,615 thefts, 92 auto thefts and 15 arsons.
