Fort Sam Houston

The Fort Sam Houston, listed on the NRHP with the number 75001950, is a base of the United States Army in San Antonio, Texas. It is named after the first President of the Republic of Texas, Sam Houston, named and is nicknamed Fort Sam. The facility serves as the headquarters of United States Army United States Army North and South and the United States Army Medical Command. Furthermore, here the Army Medical Department Center and School is located.

History

During the Mexican- American War 1846-48 a quartermaster depot of the Army was established in San Antonio. 1849 San Antonio headquarters of the 8th Military District. 1870, the Texas Department was moved to San Antonio. The " Quadrangle ," a supply depot and the oldest part of the fort, was built in 1871 by George Henry Griebel. In this later Geronimo and other Apaches were held prisoner. The construction of the actual fort began in 1876 under the leadership of the commander of the Texas Department, Major General Edward Ord, an engineer trained at West Point. During the following years, the fort was expanded continuously. 1890 received its current name of the base.

In the 1930s and '40s was the headquarters of the Southern Fort Defense Command and the U.S. 3rd Army, later the 4th U.S. Army. Mid -1930s, was built a hospital, later Brooke Army Medical Center. 1940 was the Fort Sam Houston is the largest base of the army in the United States.

In 1975, the fort, which includes more than 900 historic buildings, declared a National Historic Landmark.

Military Medicine

The Fort Sam Houston is known as " Home of Army Medicine " and "Home of the Combat Medic " known. At the end of World War II was decided by the Army to make Fort Sam Houston the main training center for military medicine. At the same time it was decided to develop the Brooke General Hospital into one of the leading military hospitals of the Army. Fort Sam Houston is now the largest and most important military medical training facility in the world.

The Army Medical Department Center and School annually trains from 25,000 students in officers, non-commissioned officer and crew training in 14 medical specialties. For Bachelor's and Master's degrees affiliations with major universities such as Baylor University, University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston and San Antonio and University of Nebraska to be entertained.

Based on the recommendations of the Base Realignment and Closure Commission of 2005, the entire military medical training system of the Army, Navy and Air Force will be consolidated at Fort Sam Houston in the future. For this purpose, to open in 2011 the Military Education and Training Campus ( METC ).
