Fort Ternan

Fort Ternan is a city in Nyando District of Nyanza Province in Kenya.

History

Fort Ternan was founded in 1895 and named after Brigadier General Trever Ternan. The city is located directly on the railway line Kisumu - Nairobi.

In the vicinity of Fort Ternan Louis Leakey discovered in 1961 fossils of Kenyapithecus wickeri, a kind of human -like from the Miocene. In addition, Leakey found there bones of an animal species of mice -like, named later by René Lavocat and Leakeymys. Significantly, the reference is for the small and very rare, also Miocene felids Kanuites.
