Fort Ville-Marie

The Fort Ville- Marie was a fortress on the Île de Montréal in New France. They formed the nucleus of the later city of Montreal. The site of the fort is classified as a National Historic Site since 1924.

History

In 1611, the French explorer Samuel de Champlain was at the Pointe -à- Callière build a temporary fort to operate fur trade for several weeks. On May 17, 1642 Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve, Jeanne Mance and about 40 other colonists landed at the same place and began with the establishment of a permanent settlement, which they called Ville- Marie. 1645 surrounded a stone fortification wall the settlement.

In the following decades, north of Fort Ville- Marie developed the actual Montreal 's Old Town. The fort was used until 1674 and 1688 canceled. In its place, the residence of Governor Louis -Hector de Callière was born. After the fort of the central district of Ville- Marie is named.
