Fortifications of Vauban

Fortifications of Vauban is summarizing the name of a World Heritage Site, the important fortress buildings of the French builder Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban ( 1633-1707 ). The UNESCO decided in 2008 to award twelve particularly exemplary and well-preserved plants by including it in the list of world heritage.

The thirteen places where are these buildings have teamed up under the name Réseau des sites majeurs Vauban ( Vauban network of main places ) in 2005 and promoted the application to the World Heritage Committee.

During the French request the heading " L' oeuvre de Vauban " bears ( The work of Vauban ), the World Heritage Committee the title of " Les Fortifications de Vauban " chose ( The Vauban fortifications ). Two proposed, standing privately owned facilities were not included. Against Le Palais on the island of Belle- Ile -en- Mer has been argued that in this citadel of Vauban personal involvement was minimal. In addition, through a hotel on the grounds there was a risk that its marketing towards the conservation gains precedence. The Castle of Bazoches, the residence of Vauban, was also deleted. It was also suggested to include other buildings such as the citadel of Lille, Le Quesnoy and a plant outside the borders of France.
