Fortunate Isles

The Fortunate Islands (Greek μακάρων νησοι makaron nesoi ) was the name of a group of islands that were described in the Greek and Celtic mythologies. The Greek poet Hesiod described them as the location of the Elysions to which the gods take the souls of heroes and beneficiaries after their death. It was believed that these islands would be amongst the western ocean near the river Okeanos. Today, Madeira, the Azores, the Canaries and Cape Verde are accepted as ways of interpretation.
