Forwarding Equivalence Class

The term Forwarding Equivalence Class is used when Multiprotocol Label Switching. It is the subset of data packets with the same or similar characteristics that are of routers all treated equally. Equal treatment means that they are placed with the same label on the same output and thus the next HOP also matches.

The characteristics used depends on the configuration of the router, but it typically includes at least the destination IP address, often the quality-of- service class.
