Fóstbrœðra saga

The Fóstbrœðra saga ( oath brothers Saga ) is an Icelandic saga from the 13th century with an action in the early 11th century. The saga is preserved in some manuscript collections, as indicated by the Olaf's saga helga the Flateyjarbóks (AM 142 fol; . AT 566a, 4 °) of the Arnamagnäanische collection.

Action

The saga is about the two blood brothers Þorgeirr and Þormóðr. The first is a hardened warrior and the second a poet and womanizer. Þorgeirr is a murderer and starts his " career " at a young age ( 15 ) by avenges his father. Both also Þormóðr is the First hardly after take a ship, looting, murdering the coasts of West Iceland and make before the peasant population no support. Þorgeirr is ostracized because of his misdeeds and Iceland have to leave. The paths of the two separate, Þormóðr remains in Iceland and Þorgeirr goes to Norway in the military service for King Olaf the Holy.

Reception

The Icelandic writer Halldór Laxness attacked for his satirical novel Gerpla (published in German as The Happy Warrior) significantly on motives of Fóstbrœðra saga back. Also in Gerpla are Þorgeirr and Þormóðr the focus of the narrative.
