Fotomuseum Winterthur

The Fotomuseum Winterthur was founded in 1993 and is dedicated to photography as an art form and document and representation of reality.

The area

The Fotomuseum in Winterthur is located in two buildings on opposite sides of the Grüzenstrasse 44 and 45 at the edge of downtown, the building at 44 Grüzenstrasse the former location of the company Ganzoni (now Sigvaris ) is. The larger the building, the Fotostiftung Switzerland is established. The larger building has an almost fully glazed ground floor and is a recent construction, while the smaller the type known in the region corresponding to textile mills. The total exhibition area is 1,000 m² floor space including the used together with the Fotostiftung rooms 3,500 m².

The Collection

Since the establishment of the Fotomuseum Winterthur in 1993, the collection of contemporary photography was established as an important aspect of museum activities. Through acquisitions, as well as through donations and permanent loans from private donors and foundations previously could expand its collection approximately 4,000 photographs. Since 2003, every year parts of the portfolio are presented in curated collection of presentations, each accompanied by brochures Collection ( Set 1, 2, 3, 4 ...). In the museum there are photographs of various contemporary artists such as Lewis Baltz, Hans Danuser, William Eggleston, Hans -Peter Feldmann, David Goldblatt, Nan Goldin, Paul Graham, Andreas Gursky, Roni Horn, Loretta Lux, Urs Lüthi, Boris Mikhailov, Arnold Odermatt, Gilles Peress, Pipilotti Rist, Annelies Štrba and many others. The collection can be viewed online via the website of the Fotomuseum Winterthur.

The Fotomuseum Winterthur is both an art gallery for photography by contemporary photographers and artists ( with exhibitions of Lewis Baltz, William Eggleston, Nan Goldin, Andreas Gursky, Roni Horn, Boris Mikhailov and many others). The Fotomuseum Winterthur other hand, is also a classic museum for works of the 19th and 20th century ( with exhibitions by Eugène Atget, Karl Blossfeldt, Bill Brandt, Dorothea Lange, Lisette Model, Albert Renger- Patzsch, August Sander, Charles Sheeler, Edward Weston, Weegee and others). And finally, there is a cultural-historical, sociological museum of applied photography in the industry, architecture, fashion, etc. ( with exhibitions on police photography, industrial photography, Dammbaufotografie, medical photography, Ding photography etc ). These three orientations form the exhibition program and the accompanying publications and events.

The Fotomuseum Winterthur operates with the Fotostiftung Switzerland together the " Centre of Photography " at the site of the museum, with specialized library, museum shop, lounge, bistro, collection depots and showrooms. Part of the Center for Photography, a public library with 18,000 books and magazines.

The museum itself is supported by the " Stiftung Fotomuseum Winterthur", which in turn is supported by the "Association Fotomuseum Winterthur" with 2,500 members.
